Pandemic is defined as “a disease prevalent over the whole country or the world.”(1) This word tends to instill a feeling of panic, which it rightfully should. Pandemics which we’ve known throughout history include the Black Death (1346 – 1353) and HIV/AIDs (1976 – Present), which have killed a combined 111 – 236 million people in the matter of years.(2) With advances in technology having made the world even smaller, the reality of containing disease is becoming less and less feasible.

This brings us to Coronavirus, or COVID-19, as it was recently named by the World Health Organization. Coronovirus has already been among us in the form of SARs in 2002 and MERS in 2015. These viruses use animals as their hosts and eventually evolved to infect humans. The four most common human Coronaviruses — named 229E, NL63, OC43 and HKU1 — actually started with humans as their hosts and “have presumably evolved to maximize spread amongst the population rather than pathogenicity,” says Jan Carette, an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Meaning, the most common forms of Coronavirus may be opting to “maximize their spread rather than harm their human host.”(3) Why would that be?  The mind certainly does wonder…

COVID-19 has risen to over 65,000 cases and over 1,600 deaths in the matter of two months.(4) Each day we learn that the virus is spreading across the globe and death tolls continue to rise.  The World Health Organization tells us a vaccine will be ready in 18 months,(5)  so in the meantime it is vital that we stop the spread.

While this is all happening our climate continues to warm up. It has been hypothesized that climate change could lead to more insect-borne diseases(6), and new viruses may emerge as well.

This leads us to the question: how can we contain viruses in a pandemic-prone world?

Here at SteriSpace™ we do not know how to expedite vaccine development or stop travelers, but we do know how to kill viruses in the air we breathe. Clean air is our expertise. Our technology is one of the only technologies that can actually kill pathogens, rather than just filtering them. SteriSpace™ will be a game-changer in isolation shelters, hospitals, airplanes, and more to help limit the spread of airborne viruses. We are excited to bring our technology to the world.
